Never Say..."Never" Golf Tournament
2006 was a special year for the Golf
Tournament. It was the 18th Annual Craig Simpson Never say .."Never"
Golf Classic matching the number 18 that Craig wore as an Edmonton
Oiler.
Once again we had a great day of golf at
the Belvedere Golf Club. It seems every year the activities
increase. This year it included the music of a mariachi band
and tender buffalo meat on the spit and then there was the
golf. There was a great deal of laughter and smiles to be seen all
over the course. There were great shots and then there were the
shots that your team will never let you forget.
The golfers, as usual, enjoyed the
entertainment and the game but the real winners were SCITCS and the
Craig Simpson and Friends Foundation. The room was filled with
generous giving people and once again we raised over $100,000.00. We
are very proud of the work that SCITCS has accomplished for the past
19 years, to create opportunities for people with a spinal cord
injury, we are very pleased to be able to contribute $45,000
annually to that effort.
We would like to say thank you to the many
people and companies who contributed and are essential to the
success of the golf tournament. We would especially like to
thank our title sponsor Locate Technologies.
The golf committee feels very fortunate to
be associated with so many generous people and companies whose
contribution makes this tournament such a super success year after
year.
It is worthy to note that there are
increasing demands on our time however despite this people continue
to participate and contribute. The committee is appreciative of
their outstanding efforts.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the
19th Annual Never Say "Never" 2007 Golf Classic
The 2005 edition of the Craig Simpson Never Say.. "Never" Golf Tournament was by far the most successful in the 17-year history of the event. More than 150 golfers assembled at the Belvedere Golf and Country Club to experience an unforgettable day. The weather was great, the golf course was in excellent condition; the food and refreshments were superb as well as abundant but even more important we got to experience first hand what it means when we say Never Say.. Never"
This year's tournament marked 17 years of Craig commitment to raising funds for SCITCS and other worthy Edmonton charities. This year more than $100,000 was raised for SCITCS and other local charities. The record amount was due in great part to the addition of Locate Technologies as our new title sponsor and All Rewards as a major sponsor. All Rewards provided us with a dream trip for two to the 2006 Masters in Augusta. The trip included first class airfare and accommodation, four days attendance at the Masters with full tournament house access passes, all meals and a round of golf (unfortunately not at Augusta). The trip sold for a record $25,000.
There was more to this year event than just a great golf tournament. In fact that seemed almost secondary. All who attended got to experience something very special. A young man by the name of Scott Oster stopped by this year to show us his newfound talent walking. Although that
doesn't seem all that exciting to most of us, it is a very special event when the person doing the walking is a paraplegic. Scott, who is 27 years old, from southern Alberta was injured in a car accident on April 13, 2001, which left him a paraplegic. As a result of the research of Dr. Richard Stein Ph.D. and pure determination on the part of Scott we witnessed what it means to Never Say..
"Never" Through a series of electrical stimulations and the aid of a walker, Scott walked across the dining room at the Belvedere clubhouse. He did so to a standing ovation. It was unbelievable. Oh, and by the way there
wasn't a dry eye in the place.
The 2006 Tournament will be in the Winter 2006 Newsletter

THE GIRL, THE TABS & THE WHEELCHAIR
This is a story about a young girl with a beautiful heart who has a strong desire to help whomever she can. Her name is Rylyn Laing and she is seven years old.
Her mother Pamela used to work in a group home, located in Saskatchewan where Rylyn had the opportunity to meet many of the clients who had disabilities. Rylyn saw how a wheelchair is essential for their mobility and how it increases the peoples ability to be involved in the community.
Rylyn heard about Wheelchairs for Kids at the Kinsmen Centre in Saskatoon and she became very excited at the prospect of helping by collecting tabs. What started out as a small project eventually became her mission. She would scour the ground looking for tabs and was always happy when she found a few. She expanded her search by asking all of her family members to help collect the tabs. This year she expanded her mission even further by asking her friends and the other pupils, at the Dunstable School, for help in helping others by collecting the simple little tabs. The news about the tabs spread quickly to Duffield School and Busby School where the students are diligent in their search. They talk about how many they have collected and the unusual places where they were found. The desire of a seven-year-old girl to help, by collecting tabs, has spread across Canada and the USA. Rylyn receives tabs from Guelph, Ontario and Arizona, USA.
Rylyn is aware that it takes over eight million-aluminum tabs to purchase a manual wheelchair but she believes that every little tab makes a difference. You can help Rylyn "to pick up the tab." Simply use the Project Wheelchair poster and start collecting tabs!
FIRE HALLS SUPPORT SCITCS PROJECT WHEELCHAIR
The fire halls of Edmonton, St Albert, and Fort Saskatchewan have been assisting SCITCS
for over
10 years to assist people with a spinal cord injury to purchase wheelchairs or provide essential parts for the wheelchairs by accepting the aluminum tabs from pop cans which SCITCS volunteers then pick up from the fire halls.
The number of Tabs donated to Project Wheelchair is declining. Therefore I am soliciting your help, SCITCS needs your help, and people with a spinal cord injury need your help.
Please download the poster requesting that Tabs be collected and taken to
the nearest fire hall. Please distribute the poster to all your family, friends, acquaintances, clubs and
associations, restaurants, etc.
Tell the personnel at the fire hall that the Tabs are to assist SCITCS to purchase wheelchairs, etc. for people with a spinal cord injury.
This unique project is absolutely a team project. We need you to
be a part of the team.
Thank you
